Biodegradable or Bio-based plastics?

Achtung! Der Inhalt dieser Seite ist nur in den folgenden Sprachen verfügbar: English - Italian

In the packaging world it is rather common to hear the term bio-plastics.

Bio-plastics consist of both biodegradable and bio-based plastics. However, there is a key difference between what’s biodegradable and what’s bio-based.

  • Biodegradable refers to the disposal at the end of the plastic life.
  • Bio-Based refers to the plastics origin, the way they are sourced.

Not all bio-plastics are biodegradable, nor all bio-plastics are bio-based.

As you can see, some bioplastics are bio based (but not biodegradable).
Some bioplastics are biodegradable (but  fossil based).
Some bioplastics are bio based and biodegradable.
